Incorporating as a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization

I have decided to incorporate Saved by Grace as a 501c3 non-profit organization. Doing so will allow me to more efficiently raise money to fund Saved by Grace and its Kingdom work. I estimate the cost of this endeavor, including miscellaneous service fees, to be in the $2,500-$3,000 (USD) range.

To raise the funds necessary for this project, as well as funds for other projects/missions, I have opened an account with GoFundMe.com, a do-it-yourself online fundraising service. A donation button has been added to the right column below the member login fields. Simply click it and follow the directions. Your donation is greatly appreciated. Please note that since the incorporation will not be completed until after the necessary funds have been received, I do not know at this time whether or not the donations would be tax deductible. As soon as I find out, I will write another post.

Thank you for considering donating to this project of Saved by Grace. May God richly bless you exceedingly beyond your ability to measure in all that you do in faithful obedience to Him.

  1. Your intention to incorporate your ministry as a tax exempt organization (501(c)3)) is admirable and very fine. I wish you every success in that endeavor. I happen to know that you can incorporate as a religious organization and classified as an auxiliary of a church. If you do that, then you will be automatically tax exempt. The information about this is on the I.R.S. Publication Form 1023 instructions. Now, as to the cost of incorporation, you don’t need to spend 2,500 to 3,000 dollars; not even a tenth of that amount is necessary. Visit the Secretary of State web site for the state in which you reside. You can act as your own registered agent for the corporation, so don’t fall for those “registered agent” companies.

In my estimation, you could incorporate for approximately $25 to $150 depending on the jurisdiction and as long as you make the filing directly with the Secretary of State.

God Bless you in your endeavor to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

    1. Thank you for your comments and advice. If only I had received them a month ago I could have saved a lot of money. I did manage to get a “deal” from one of those “registered agent” companies you mentioned. The total cost of incorporating as a 501c3 non-profit organization (started a month ago and still in progress) will be $1,014 (USD). Obviously not as good as the estimates you gave; but, better than the original estimates I was receiving. However, add to that the cost of professional liability insurance, non-profit accounting software, fees to access the extensive database(s) of grants, etc. and the amount requied soon approaches the original estimate of $2,500-$3,000 (USD) again.

If you have any additional comments or advice, please do not hesitate to contact me. I want to be a good steward of the limited resources God gives me. Timely knowledge gives me the opportunity to act/choose wisely.
