Matthew 16:13-16 (NASB)
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15 He said* to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Heavenly Father, as we open Your Word today, please reveal to us the truths You would have us receive. Please burn them into our hearts and minds that they would become an everlasting testimony of You imprinted on our souls for all eternity. We pray this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
What is your answer to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?”
Who is Jesus?
1) According to Some, a Good Teacher
Matthew 16:14b (NASB)
14 … “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
- John the Baptist – great preaching ability
- Elias/Elijah – miracles performed
- Jeremias/Jeremiah – weeping prophet
2) According to His Disciples, the Son of God
Matthew 16:16 (NASB)
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
In response to Peter’s confession:
Matthew 16:17 (NASB)
17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
3) According to Him, God Himself
In response to the Jews in the temple in Solomon’s Porch:
John 10:22-30 (NASB)
22 At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem; 23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon. 24 The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26 “But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. 27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 “I and the Father are one.”
In response to Philip and the rest of the disciples:
John 14:6-11 (NASB)
6 Jesus said* to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. 7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.” 8 Philip said* to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said* to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. 11 “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.
C.S. Lewis observed:
“You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to” – C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity (Macmillan, 1952, pp. 40-41).
Whom do you say Jesus is?

James 4:17 (NASB)
17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

John 3:16-18 (NASB)
16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
I am saved; but, I have sin in my life that I need to confess and repent.
1 John 1:8-9 (NASB)
8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Acts 3:19 (NASB)
19 "Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
