Freedom

Scripture

John 8:31-36 (NASB)
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for supplying us with Your Word. As we continue in Your Word, please give us discernment that we may learn to be Your disciples. Help us to grow in Christ-likeness, for it is in His name that we pray. Amen.

Main Points

1. If you continue in Jesus’ Word…

Promise is to believers.

John 8:31a (NASB)
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, …

You must be a believer to be a beneficiary of the promise.

Promise is conditional.

John 8:31b (NASB)
31  … “If you continue in My word,

“Couch potato” Christians are not beneficiaries of the promise.

2. You are truly disciples of Jesus

John 8:31 (NASB)
31  … thenyou are truly disciples of Mine;

If you are a believer, continuing in Jesus’ Word, then you are His disciple.

He Is the Truth Whether We Believe Him or Not

Romans 3:1-4a (NASB)
1 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? 2  Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? 4 May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be founda liar, …

4. The truth will make you free

John 8:32 (NASB)
32  … and the truth will make you free.”

Free from the Law of Sin and Death

Romans 8:2 (NASB)
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

Free Because We Are Being Transformed into the Image of the Spirit of the Lord

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 (NASB)
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18  But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

Free to Be an Example to Others

2 Timothy 2:24-26 (NASB)
24  The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, 25 with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

Conclusion

John 8:33-36 (NASB)
33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Once, we were slaves to sin.

Jesus freed us from the bondage of sin.

To fully experience our freedom through Christ, we must:

  • Know the Truth, which we discover by
  • Being His disciples, which we become by
  • Continuing in His Word

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for setting us free through Your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and through the wisdom of Your Word. Help us to be the disciples You would have us to be. Help us to bring honor and glory to Your name. We pray this in the precious name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
